چکیده
Received July 2009 Accepted January 2010 INTRODUCTION Renal pelvis is normally lined by urothelium and contains neither squamous nor intestinal epithelium. However, transitional cell epithelium undergoes phenotypic changes usually in the form of squamous metaplasia.(1) We report a rare case of intestinal metaplasia of the renal pelvis with cytokeratin profile and assessment of the tumor markers to set light to understand the pathogenesis of the multistep pathway through metaplasia to neoplasia.

Primary Tubulovillous Adenocarcinoma of Renal Pelvis: An Unusual Genitourinary Tumor
Prolonged inflammation or irritation due to renal calculi can induce glandular metaplasia of the urothelium and even malignant neoplasm. Primary adenocarcinoma in pelvicalyceal system is a rare tumor in such patients. Here, a case of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) positive primary tubulovillous adenocarcinoma in pelvicalyceal system is reported. A 57-year-old male with right abdominal pain and ...

The current study reports a case of intestinal metaplasia in the right renal pelvis, which was associated with staghorn calculi, in a 56-year-old female. The patient underwent a percutaneous nephrolithotomy. Immunohistochemical assessment of the mucosa of the renal pelvis revealed the ...

Mixed neuroendocrine and non-neuroendocrine type of tumor in renal pelvis is rare and presents a high-grade malignancy. We present a case report that a 57-year-old man had no history of small cell cancer but presented a high-grade neuroendocrine carcinoma with focal squamous metaplasia and multiple stones simultaneously in the right renal pelvis. The patient underwent nephroureterocystectomy 9 ...
متن کاملSquamous Cell Carcinoma of the Renal Pelvis as a Result of Long-Standing Staghorn Calculi
We report on a 79-year-old woman with staghorn calculi who presented with severe hypercalcemia. She was later found to have humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy caused by a rare tumor, squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis. Chronic irritation, infection and inflammation from staghorn stones cause squamous metaplasia, leading to squamous cell carcinoma of the renal collecting system. The pr...
